In 1874, the Custer Expedition discovered gold in the Black Hills—setting off a frenzy that would give birth to Deadwood, South Dakota. By 1876, this once-quiet gulch had filled with 10,000 prospectors, gamblers, madams, and gunslingers chasing fortune and freedom.
Legends like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Seth Bullock walked the same streets where Silverado now stands. Wild Bill met his fate during a poker game here, and today rests in Mount Moriah Cemetery, overlooking the historic district.
As gold poured in, Deadwood transformed into one of the wealthiest towns west of the Mississippi—boasting electricity, trolleys, telephones, and Victorian mansions before many U.S. cities could catch up.
Though gambling was technically outlawed for 113 years, that didn’t stop Deadwood. Saloons, backroom poker tables, and private clubs thrived—so much so that when Las Vegas needed trained dealers, they turned to Deadwood’s best.
In 1989, South Dakota voters re-legalized gaming in Deadwood, using tax revenues to fund what’s now one of the largest historic preservation projects in North America—with over $170 million invested to date.
